Funding of New NGO Sub-Projects for HIV/AIDS

Guyana HIV/AIDS Prevention & Control Project (GAPCP)
Funded by the Government of Guyana and the World Bank

The Guyana HIV/ AIDS Prevention & Control Project (GAPCP) will be signing MOUs valued at G$68,295,900 (US$341,479) with 17 Non-Governmental Organisations for the implementation of HIV/ AIDS sub-projects across Guyana.

The 17 new NGOs will join a batch of 11 organisations already funded by this Project, bringing the total funding to G$121,127,700 (US$605,638). The 17 NGOs were selected from a group of 45 organisations which applied for funding through a public call for proposals issued in September 2005.

GAPCP is a Project managed by the Health Sector Development Unit of the Ministry of Health. GAPCP took effect in May 2003 when an Agreement was signed between the Government of Guyana and the World Bank. The Project was officially launched in March 2005 and also finances seven (7) Line Ministry Programmes and strengthens the Ministry of Health’s capacity to fight HIV/ AIDS.

The 28 organisations funded by GAPCP have interventions which will be implemented in all 10 Administrative Regions of Guyana. The various Programs will target Orphans and Vulnerable Children, Amerindians, miners, at-risk youth, the armed forces, farmers, employers/ workplaces and the general population. A number of faith-based organisations will implement faith and culture-sensitive awareness programmes. Hospital and home care, nutritional and psychosocial support will be provided to persons living with HIV/ AIDS through a number of the programs.

Sub-projects will target areas such as the Essequibo Coast & Islands, Bartica/ Upper Cuyuni & Mazaruni River, St. Cuthbert’s Mission, Santa Mission, Sophia, Lethem, Annai, Sand Creek, Aishalton, Mahdia, Kurupung, Matthews Ridge, Port Kaituma, Ayanganna, Timehri, Seweyo, Coomacka, Linden, Mabaruma, Morawhanna, Benab, Pakaraimas, Makouria, Tacama, Ruimveldt, Cove & John, New Amsterdam, Albion, Georgetown and the West Coast of Demerara.

• Guyana Rice Producers Association – HIV/ AIDS Awareness for Farming Communities
• New Stars Drama Group – Don’t Take Chances
• Albion Chapel Library & Skills Training Centre – Single Parent & Adolescent Empowerment Programme
• Camal International Home – Hope for the Kids Project
• The Network of Guyanese Living with & Affected by HIV/ AIDS (G+) – Operation H*E*L*P
• Love and Faith World Outreach Ministries – Hands on Care: Youth of Sophia Outreach Project
• Hope for All – Improving the Quality of Life Through HIV/ AIDS Services in Essequibo
• Ruimveldt Children’s Aid Centre – The Rise of the Riverview Children
• Guyana Hindu Dharmic Sabha – Dharmic HIV/ AIDS Education & Support Programme
• Guyana Red Cross Society – Building Capacity; Empowering Lives
• Hope Children’s Home – Improvement of Supportive Care & Education for HIV/AIDS-vulnerable Orphans
• Sectional Youth Ministries – HIV/ AIDS Education & Prevention Through Faith Based Organisations

Sub-projects will be implemented over a 2 year period.
